The Gifts of the Holy Spirit at Work in Jesus Youth (BJYT011)

Image
The Gifts of the Spirit or Charisms at Work in Jesus Youth What are the manifestations of the Spirit in JY? (Dr. Edward Edezhath - input for proposed JYA Ad-Core followup) Paul writes, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1 Cor 12:7) What St Paul saw in the early Church, the Church still sees—and needs—today. Vatican II (LG 12) and the Catechism (CCC 799–801) teach that charisms have not ceased; they are given “for the renewal and building up of the Church.”  What are the typical manifestations of the Spirit today, with a special focus on what we frequently encounter in Jesus Youth (JY) individuals and communities? 1) Pauline/Biblical framework (the same today) • Sanctifying gifts (Is 11:2) that make us holy: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord. • Charismatic gifts (1 Cor 12; Rom 12; 1 Pet 4): prophecy, healing, tongues, interpretation, miracles, discernment of spirits, words of knowledge/wisdo...

Qualities of Youth Mentors (BJYT010)

Image
Qualities of Youth Mentors Pope Francis, Christus Vivit (2019) 245. There is also a special need to accompany young men and women showing leadership potential, so that they can receive training and the necessary qualifications. The young people who met before the Synod called for “programmes for the formation and continued development of young leaders. Some young women feel that there is a lack of leading female role models within the Church and they too wish to give their intellectual and professional gifts to the Church. We also believe that seminarians and religious should have an even greater ability to accompany young leaders”. 246. The same young people described to us the qualities they hope to find in a mentor, and they expressed this with much clarity. “The qualities of such a mentor include: being a faithful Christian who engages with the Church and the world; someone who constantly seeks holiness; someone who is a confidant without judgement. Similarly, someone who acti...

Youth Accompaniment - Youth Ministry (BJYT009)

Youth Accompaniment - Youth Ministry  Youth Ministry - Community, youth, and discipline I taught literature and psychology in those schools, and some of my pupils were very inquisitive, sometimes even rebellious. On one occasion, a boy called Roberto slapped a smaller boy during a game of football. It was a serious matter, but rather than punishing him I thought up a different lesson. I told him to meet me in a classroom on a particular day at a particular time.  When he arrived, he found ten of his classmates sitting in a circle with me. I asked him to tell them all what had happened, and to give his reasons for what he had done. Some of his friends consoled him, others gave him advice, a few laughed the whole thing off (I pretended not to notice). And then this special “student committee” decided on its punishment: an immediate apology to the boy he had slapped and a two-week suspension from all sporting activities. This stratagem of mine had a double aim: on one hand, it wa...
