The Gifts of the Holy Spirit at Work in Jesus Youth (BJYT011)

The Gifts of the Spirit or Charisms at Work in Jesus Youth

What are the manifestations of the Spirit in JY?

(Dr. Edward Edezhath - input for proposed JYA Ad-Core followup)

Paul writes, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1 Cor 12:7)

What St Paul saw in the early Church, the Church still sees—and needs—today. Vatican II (LG 12) and the Catechism (CCC 799–801) teach that charisms have not ceased; they are given “for the renewal and building up of the Church.”

What are the typical manifestations of the Spirit today, with a special focus on what we frequently encounter in Jesus Youth (JY) individuals and communities?

1) Pauline/Biblical framework (the same today)

• Sanctifying gifts (Is 11:2) that make us holy: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord.

• Charismatic gifts (1 Cor 12; Rom 12; 1 Pet 4): prophecy, healing, tongues, interpretation, miracles, discernment of spirits, words of knowledge/wisdom, faith, service, administration, teaching, exhortation, mercy, generosity.

• Ecclesial/ministerial gifts (Eph 4:11): apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers—raised up to equip the saints.

• Fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:22–23): love, joy, peace, etc.—the “quality control” of authentic manifestations.

2) What we actually see in Jesus Youth groups & persons

A. Kerygmatic–charismatic gifts

• Prophecy & words of knowledge/wisdom during prayer meetings, retreats, and discernment gatherings (often confirming direction, calling to repentance, or consoling the discouraged).

• Healing & deliverance ministries—physical, emotional, and relational healings; inner healing retreats; freedom from addictions.

• Tongues & interpretation, songs of the Spirit, and deep intercession chains that sustain missions, families, and leaders.

B. Evangelization & missionary impulse

• Evangelistic zeal toward students and young professionals; campus/outreach teams; street evangelization; Life in the Spirit seminars.

• Apostolic creativity in music, theatre, film, digital evangelization—the Spirit inspiring beauty that opens hearts to Christ.

• Missionary families who relocate or intentionally build missional hospitality hubs.

C. Community-building & accompaniment

• Pastoral/mentoring charisms: spiritual fatherhood/motherhood, accompaniment of the wounded, vocational guidance.

• Hospitality & mercy: welcoming newcomers, caring for the lonely, supporting the poor and migrants.

• Reconciliation & unity: peacemaking inside teams; cross-cultural bridges; “the charism of networking” that JY uniquely embodies.

D. Governance, wisdom & discernment

• Administration and leadership charisms that give structure without suffocating the Spirit (designing formation pathways, sustainable mission frameworks).

• Communal discernment (“conversations in the Spirit,” synodal listening) yielding shared insight, repentance, and renewed direction.

• Strategic generosity & stewardship—people gifted to resource missions (fundraising, professional skills, legal/financial prudence).

E. Contemplative & prophetic witness

• Assiduous intercession, Eucharistic adoration, fasting—fueling mission with contemplation.

• Suffering borne with joy (Col 1:24): hidden intercessors, those carrying illnesses or trials united to Christ for the movement’s fruitfulness.

• Holiness in ordinary life—families, students, professionals radiating the fruits of the Spirit in daily fidelity.

3) How do we discern authenticity?

 (some quick rules of thumb)

1. Christocentric (1 Cor 12:3): Does it lead to deeper confession of Jesus as Lord?

2. For the common good (1 Cor 12:7): Does it build up the body, not just the ego?

3. Fruits > fireworks (Gal 5:22–23): Is there lasting love, joy, peace, patience?

4. Communion & obedience (LG 12; CCC 801): Is it recognized, tested, and sent by the community and its pastors?

5. Clarity, humility, accountability (1 Thess 5:19–22): Are prophecies weighed? Are ministries supervised? Are corrections welcomed?

4) Practical ways JY can steward and multiply these manifestations

• Charism discernment tracks/workshops (help each member name, test, and deploy their gifts).

• Prophetic & intercession teams with clear protocols (recording, testing, submitting words).

• Testimony nights (normalize and document God’s works; faith grows when told).

• Mentor formation pathways (form shepherds who can discern gifts in others).

• Artistic ministry labs (music/theatre/film) to channel creative charisms for mission.

• Regular communal examens: “How did the Spirit move among us this month? What fruits? What corrections?”

• Integration with parish/diocesan life (so gifts serve the wider Church, not just the movement).

A word from the Catechism

“Extraordinary or simple and humble, charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit… ordered to the good of men and to the needs of the world.” (CCC 799–801)
