Charism Discovery Session for JY Groups (BJYT013)

Charism discovery session in JY Groups

A Sample Charism Discovery Session tailored for a Jesus Youth Household or Regional Fellowship — a dynamic, prayerful, and reflective gathering designed to help participants begin recognizing their spiritual and practical gifts.

🌿 Charism Discovery Session

Theme:

“The Spirit Has Given You a Gift – For the Body”

Ideal Audience: Household members, youth/adults in formation, core team

Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours

Setting: In-person or hybrid (small group–friendly)

Materials Needed:

• Printed JY Charism Inventory Tool (or Google Form)

• Bibles, pens, name tags

• Poster or projector with 1 Cor 12:4–7

• Music setup (for worship)

• Candles or a simple prayer space

🌟  Session Flow

1. Welcome & Warm-Up (10 min)

• Short icebreaker: “If you could suddenly master any skill for mission, what would it be?”

• Intentional opening: “Tonight is not about labeling yourself but listening to how the Spirit may want to move through you.”

2. Praise & Worship (15–20 min)

• Choose songs that emphasize the Holy Spirit and mission (e.g., Holy Spirit You Are Welcome Here, Set a Fire, or a local JY favorite).

• End with the prayer:

“Holy Spirit, reveal to us the unique ways You have gifted each of us for Your Church.”

3. Input: Charisms in the Life of the Church (15 min)

Speaker (or team member) gives a short teaching. Sample outline below:

• What are charisms? (CCC 799–801; 1 Cor 12; Eph 4)

• How are they different from talents?

• Every baptized Christian receives charisms for the good of the Body.

• Stories from Jesus Youth: how music, food, prayer, friendship, art, organization, or drama have led to evangelization and healing.

• Quote: “Your gift is not for you; it’s for someone else’s salvation.”

4. Guided Personal Reflection – “My Life in the Spirit” (15 min)

Use these guiding questions:

📝 When was a time I felt joyfully used by God?

📝 Where do others naturally turn to me for help?

📝 What kind of service drains me—and what gives me life?

📝 Have I ever felt the Holy Spirit moving through me in prayer, service, or creativity?

5. Charism Inventory Activity (25–30 min)

Distribute the JY Charism Inventory Tool (print or link).

Let participants work through it in silence or soft instrumental background music.

Encourage journaling in the margins.

Optional: Create thematic corners (Prayer, Service, Leadership, Creative, Relational) and let people walk around reading posters with examples of each charism.

6. Small Group Sharing (20–25 min)

Break into groups of 3–4. Share answers to:

• “One gift I noticed in myself tonight…”

• “A gift I see in one of you…”

Groups pray over each other briefly, affirming what they heard.

7. Community Affirmation Moment (15 min)

Return to the larger group.

Invite 3–5 people to stand and share briefly:

“I’m sensing God might be calling me to grow in the area of…”

Leader or mentor gives a short word of encouragement or prayer for each.

8. Blessing & Sending (10 min)

• Invite a priest or senior leader to say a Prayer of Anointing or Commissioning:

“Lord, stir into flame the gifts You’ve placed in these hearts…”

• Conclude with a joyful worship song and blessing.

🧭 Follow-Up Ideas

• Offer 1:1 follow-up with a mentor

• Create a gift map of the group (who carries which charism)

• Encourage new ministry experiments

• Run a “Gift in Action” night where people serve in new roles

• Plan a second session: “Charisms in Mission – Where My Gift Meets a Need”

A Facilitator’s Guide for leading a Jesus Youth Charism Discovery Session—ideal for household leaders, formation coordinators, or regional team members.

🎤 Facilitator’s Guide: Jesus Youth Charism Discovery Session

Session Title: The Spirit Has Given You a Gift – For the Body

Duration: 2–2.5 hours

Target Group: JY household members (youth, young adults, families, or core teams)

🎯 Session Goals

• To introduce participants to the concept of charisms as Spirit-given for mission.

• To help individuals identify their personal gifts through guided reflection.

• To build a culture of affirmation and mission-oriented service in the group.

🛠️ Before the Session: Preparation Checklist

Item Details

🌿 Venue Arrange a cozy, prayerful space with music setup and group seating.

🎵 Worship Identify a 2–3 song set focused on the Holy Spirit and mission.

📄 Materials Print Charism Inventory Sheets (or provide QR code for digital form).

📖 Scripture Prepare Bible verse posters (esp. 1 Cor 12:4–7, 1 Pet 4:10).

👥 Team Assign roles: worship leader, short talk speaker, sharing circle facilitator, and final blessing leader (optional: priest/deacon).

✨ Prayer Have intercessors pray before and during the session.

🧭 Session Flow: Detailed Facilitation Plan

1. Welcome & Opener (10 min)

• Greet warmly. Say:

“Tonight isn’t about labeling yourself. It’s about listening to how the Spirit moves in you for the good of others.”

• Icebreaker (Optional): “If you could instantly have one skill for mission, what would it be?”

2. Praise & Worship (15–20 min)

Lead with joy and expectant faith. End with the prayer:

“Holy Spirit, reveal to us how You’ve gifted each one of us for Your Church.”

3. Input Talk: What Are Charisms? (15 min)

Speaker shares (or facilitator reads aloud):

• Definition: Charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit for the building up of the Church (CCC 799–801).

• Difference from talents: Charisms are Spirit-powered and bear spiritual fruit in others.

• Encourage: “You already have at least one. It’s time to recognize it and start using it!”

• Tell a short story of how a hidden gift (hospitality, prayer, media, leadership) bore fruit in a JY setting.

4. Guided Personal Reflection (15 min)

Ask the group to quietly reflect on:

• When did I feel joyfully used by God?

• What do others often affirm in me?

• Where do I serve and feel most alive?

Encourage silence, journaling, and soft background music.

5. Charism Inventory Activity (25–30 min)

Distribute the JY Charism Inventory Tool or direct participants to the Google Form.

Facilitator Instructions:

• Ask them to work through it quietly.

• Emphasize: “There are no right answers. This is your moment of discovery.”

• Offer support if someone looks confused.

Optional enhancement: Create four “gift zones” (Prayer, Service, Creative, Leadership) with posters and markers. Let people walk and read before filling the form.

6. Small Group Sharing (20–25 min)

Break into groups of 3–4. Prompt questions:

1. One gift I noticed in myself tonight…

2. A gift I see in you is…

3. How might God be calling us to use our gifts together?

Facilitator Instructions:

• Rotate roles if needed (e.g., timekeeper, note-taker).

• Ensure everyone has a chance to speak and affirm others.

7. Community Affirmation Moment (15 min)

Ask for a few volunteers to share with the full group:

• “I feel God may be calling me to grow in…”

Leader (or priest) offers 1-line affirmations or blessing after each.

8. Final Blessing & Sending (10 min)

Suggested format:

• Stand in a circle, hold hands or pray with hands open.

• Pray a simple commissioning prayer (see below).

• Conclude with a joyful sending song.

✝️ Sample Commissioning Prayer

Holy Spirit, we thank You for the unique gifts You’ve placed in each of us. We ask You to stir into flame what has been revealed today. Give us courage to serve, joy to love, and boldness to witness. Let Your gifts bear fruit in this group, in the Church, and in the world. We are Yours. Amen.

📌 Post-Session Follow-Up

Encourage:

• 1-on-1 mentoring conversations (pair with a leader or older member)

• Use of gifts in real settings: worship, logistics, media, teaching, outreach, etc.

• Second session: “Putting Our Charisms into Mission”

• Create a gift map or spreadsheet to note emerging gifts in the group.
