Identifying Gifts and Charims

Nurture Gifts and Charisms in JY Groups

A practical Roadmap for Identifying and Journeying Forward with Jesus Youth (JY) Gifts and Charisms — designed to help individuals, households, and groups recognize, affirm, and deploy their spiritual and practical charisms for the mission of Christ through the Jesus Youth movement.

🔶  Step-by-Step Roadmap: Discovering and Living JY Charisms

🟡 1. Create an Atmosphere of Openness

Goal: Foster a culture where gifts are noticed, affirmed, and stewarded in love.

• Begin every gathering with expectant prayer: “Come, Holy Spirit…”

• Share testimonies regularly to normalize God’s action through people.

• Create spaces where people feel safe to try, fail, grow, and be affirmed.

• Highlight biblical and Church teaching on charisms (e.g., 1 Cor 12, CCC 799–801).

💬 “Each has received a gift; use it to serve one another.” (1 Peter 4:10)

🟡 2. Help Individuals Discern Their Gifts

Goal: Each member begins naming and owning their God-given charisms.

• Use simple tools:

○ JY-style Charism Inventory (customized to JY realities)

○ Short sessions during formation to reflect on:

→ “What do I enjoy doing for the Kingdom?”

→ “What do others affirm in me?”

→ “Where do I see fruit and joy?”

• Encourage journaling: “Where did I see the Spirit work through me this week?”

• Invite mentors or leaders to speak a word of affirmation into someone’s gift.

✨ Tip: Organize a “Charism Discovery Evening” for prayer, reflection, and peer affirmations.

🟡  3. Create Opportunities to Practice

Goal: Give people room to try, grow, and refine their charisms.

• Let newer members try small roles: welcome, lead prayer, give a short input.

• Rotate responsibilities in events so people can explore multiple areas.

• Pair experienced members with new ones (mentoring model) in ministry activities.

• Use smaller teams to plan and execute different aspects of a program (food, media, music, games, prayer, outreach, etc.)

🛠️ Formation without mission becomes stale; mission without formation becomes shallow.

🟡  4. Name, Affirm, and Bless

Goal: Recognize and send people forth in their charisms for the good of the Church.

• Include a simple commissioning prayer during fellowships or retreats.

• Acknowledge gifts publicly and invite others to support and pray.

• Use “Charism Spotlights” during team meetings to highlight a member’s strength.

• Create a visible ministry/team matrix showing who carries which gift.

💡 Naming a gift gives it space to grow; blessing it multiplies the grace.

🟡  5. Integrate into Mission & group Life

Goal: Align charisms with real needs and missionary opportunities.

• Encourage each fellowship/group to review their mission activities and ask:

→ “Are we using the gifts God has given us well?”

• Match people’s charisms to ministry needs (e.g., a planner to lead logistics, an encourager to do follow-ups).

• Explore parish and public sphere involvement as mission frontiers.

🌱 Charisms grow when they are given away.

🟡  6. Reflect and Realign Regularly

Goal: Stay sensitive to the Spirit and renew the use of gifts as the group evolves.

• Include a monthly or seasonal discernment session in groups:

→ “How is the Spirit moving among us?”

→ “What needs pruning or fresh encouragement?”

• Welcome new charisms that emerge; avoid over-professionalizing ministry roles.

• Use feedback loops: What fruit are we seeing? What seems dry?

🔄 Discernment is not a one-time event; it’s a rhythm.

🟢 A Living Culture of Charisms in Jesus Youth Looks Like:

• Joyful diversity: many gifts, one Spirit (1 Cor 12:4–7)

• Bold initiative: youth stepping into roles beyond their comfort zone

• Mutual support: affirmation and correction in love

• Mission focus: gifts fueling evangelization, not just internal activity

• Humility and maturity: “It’s not my gift, it’s for His mission”

🛠️ Resources You Can Use:

• 🔸 Charism Inventory Worksheet

• 🔸 Sample Charism Discovery Session Plan

• 🔸 Charism Discernment Cards (for use in retreats or team training)
